Book cover of Where Did the Shade Go?: Tammy the tamaraw with Scoops the owl on her head and Ruby the dove beside her, on a bare golden hill, with a green forest and a big flowering tree on the mountain behind.

Meet the friends

Four friends. One very big mountain.

Every friend is a real animal or tree from Mindoro, an island in the Philippines. Kids fall for the characters first and learn about the forest without noticing.

Tammy, a small round brown tamaraw with V-shaped horns and a blade of grass in her mouth.
Let's GO! STOMP!

Charges in first and thinks second. Real tamaraw are tiny wild buffalo found only on Mindoro.

Scoops, a round brown owl with ear tufts and sleepy golden eyes.
Hoo... I'm awake!

Knows everything and is asleep for most of it. Rides around on Tammy's horns like a hat.

Ruby, a plump grey and green dove with a red heart on her white chest.
Coo! I have an idea.

Counts everything and always keeps one seed, just in case. One of the rarest birds in the world.

Lola Narra, a huge old tree with yellow flowers and a kind face in her bark.
Hmmmm.

The oldest tree on the mountain. She knows what trees really do, and it's more than shade.

Book one

Where Did the Shade Go?

Tammy's hill is hot and bare. So the friends set off to find Lola Narra, the last big tree, splashing through a river, sliding down a mud slope and getting lost in the forest on the way. What they learn sends them racing back down the hill to plant a forest of their own.

Made for early readers

Comic panels with speech bubbles of 3 to 8 words, so a new reader can read Tammy's lines out loud.

Laughs on every page

STOMP!, SPLASH! and a very sleepy owl. It has to survive the fortieth bedtime reading, so it's written to be funny.

Real nature, gently

Real Mindoro animals and a real forest. The science of how trees keep carbon arrives as a story, never a scare.

Comic page: Scoops tries to sleep on a stump, then Tammy stomps and Scoops shoots into the air shouting I'm awake.
Page 5. The STOMP.
Comic page: Tammy says I can jump that, leaps at a river, and lands with a giant SPLASH while Ruby hops across on stepping stones.

The forest in the book is real

Tammy's hill is on Mindoro, in the Philippines. The bare hills are real, and so is the native forest being planted back on them through the Mindoro Arawatan project, listed on the Verra registry. Wovoka, the company behind carbon.kids, works on it with GCash GForest, Mindoro Coffee Company and Inclusive Forests.

Why we make these

Nature first, carbon second

Most climate material for children is frightening or abstract. A forest is neither. Kids already know a big old tree is doing something important, so our books start with the animals and the place, and let the carbon idea arrive as an explanation of something the child already cares about.

Series one

Places that breathe

Real carbon-holding landscapes: tropical forest, mangrove coast, cloud forest, peatland. Tammy & Friends starts here.

Series two

People of the land

Stories of Indigenous leaders and land stewards, made with the communities involved in how they are shown.

Series three

Enough

Gentle books about having less and noticing more: forest bathing, slowness, and not needing much plastic.
